Answers

Is the retail examination changing?

No. The current National Registry retail examination is exactly the same as it was. It just won’t be called “SafeMark.” The examination was written by subject matter experts from the grocery industry and is intended for food managers in the retail grocery industry.

Why did the FMI/NRFSP partnership end?

FMI submitted a request for proposal in March to which National Registry responded. FMI has not provided any explanation for a change, but this is not unusual in business.

When will this go into effect?

The change is effective October 1, 2016; however, there will be no interruption of product, service, or quality either prior to or after those dates. In fact we will continue with production of the examination on the additional delivery systems as we had planned and will simply change the examination name in October.

Will this have any impact on the examination accreditation?

There is nothing National Registry must do to maintain accreditation since the examination is not changing. Any new examination by another provider must go through the accreditation process however.

How can I order the retail examination? Does my ordering process change?

The ordering process stays the same. You can still order examinations in the same way you always have, and that will continue after October 1.

If I place an order today, which version of the examination will I get?

You will continue to receive a SafeMark examination until September 30, 2016. On October 1, you will receive forms of the examination that will simply not have the SafeMark logo.

What about future versions of the examination?

The examination will be updated, as always, using industry subject matter experts based on the most recent Food Code.

I’m currently using SafeMark training. Can I still take your examination?

Yes. In fact, you can use any training. Our retail examination is not tied to any particular training and is based solely on the most recent edition of the FDA Food Code. Examination questions are based on results of our most recent job task analysis and were written utilizing applications that managers in grocery settings would recognize. National Registry has not had a business relationship with FMI to provide training and has, and continues to maintain, independence from any specific training.

Is anything else changing?

National Registry will be adding the grocery examination across all of its delivery platforms this year making it easier than ever to take a food manager examination. With our growing relationship with Innovative Exams remote proctoring system, our sales team is looking forward to working with larger retailers to include testing centers in their stores. You’ll also see an expansion of our HACCP offerings including our application for scope extension to have the examination accredited under ISO/IEC 17024. As has been in the workings, National Registry is continuing to expand is decade-long relationship with many of you as your trusted provider of food safety certification solutions across your business.
